Taran is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Smolyan Municipality, Smolyan region.

It is 17 km northeast from the town of Smolyan, about 13 km northwest from the town of Madan, 34 km southeast from the resort Pamporovo in the same direction at 254 km from the capital Sofia. Trebiste village is 3 km northeast.
Regular bus service connects the city with the municipal town.

Located in the mountainous area at ​​717 m above sea level. The mountain climate is marked by influence of the Mediterranean. Winter is mild and snowy, summer is cool and wet, and the autumn - long and warm.

Taran comprises of five neighbourhoods - Ravnishte, Razhishte, Taran, Leshtishte and Elenska. Its population is about 1,500 people.

There is a town hall, primary school, community center, kindergarten, shops, restaurants and a mosque. In the village a doctor and a dentist are working. There is a range of mobile operators, cable TV and Internet. The nearest hospital is in the town of Smolyan.

Tourism and landmarks

Historic landmark is the Roman Bridge, located in the village over the black, built more than two centuries.

4 km from Taran is located Momchilova fortress. At the top, on a rocky peak in the territory of the fortress are being studied Thracian sanctuary, dating from the late Chalcolithic - V thousand years BC, when people develop technique copper processing.
