Village of Elhovets

Elhovets is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Rudozem Municipality, Smolyan region.

It is about 8 km southwest from the town of Rudozem, 22 km southwest from the town of Madan, about 34 km southeast from the town of Smolyan, 51 km southeast from the resort Pamporovo and 276 km southeast  from the city of Sofia.
The village has regular bus service linking it to the towns of Smolyan and Rudozem.

Located in the southeastern part of the Rhodope Mountains at 777 m altitude. The permanent population is about 1,100 people.

The climate is temperate-continental. Characterized by mild and long winter and cool summer.

Elhovets has good infrastructure and has a town hall, primary school, kindergarten, post office, community center, health center and several shops. There are Internet, cable TV and coverage of all mobile operators. Visitors to the village can stay in one of two family hotels. Available for the guests are two pools, restaurant and tavern.
The nearest hospital is located in the town of Rudozem.

 

Surroundings and sights

In the town of Rudozem you can visit the following sites:

  •  Medieval fortress "Koznik" - This interesting fortress is situated on a cliff above the town of Rudozem. Ecotrail "Kechi Kaya" - "Koznik" is situated there. The fortress is part of the whole fortress system. There were found many pieces of pottery from different periods and an ancient Roman temple.

  •  Monastery "St. Helena" (formerly known as "Saint Irene") above the village Plovdivtsi;

In the town of Madan, you can visit:

  •  Cave Museum "Sharenka".  This is the first cave museum in Bulgaria.
  • The area ​​"Gabata" - rock with a small cave in which were found pieces of pottery from different periods. Following the path of the rock massif leads to the Thracian mines.
  •  Nearby is the rock 'Rimpapa ", 50 meters high, resembling a man with a cape. Behind it are the remains of an ancient settlement.
  •  The area "Kichikaya" a Proto-Bulgarian fortress, later conquered by the Romans. Old stone walls of buildings and walls are preserved. The well is also preserved, dug nine meters down into the rock.
  • Mosque "The Golden Koran" in the village of Chepintsi. This mosque is the emblem of the village and is the only one in the country with two minarets of a 35 m. It has a rich library of over 800 publications and books in Arabic and Persian in philosophy, astronomy, Islamic law and rhetoric.
