Village of Brashten

Brashten is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Dospat Municipality, Smolyan region.

It is nearly 19 km southwest from the town of Dospat, about 91 km west from the town of Smolyan, about 2 km from the Greek border and 216 km southeast from the city of Sofia.

Brashten Village is located in a mountainous area with large pine forest on the edge of the canyon of the river Dospat. Its altitude is 1079 m.
The climate is Mediterranean, but due to the high altitude is not typically expressed. Winter is mild, spring comes late, the autumn is warm and summer is cool.

The permanent population is about 850 people. The main occupation is cultivation of tobacco.

In the village there is a town hall, kindergarten, school, community center, mosque, shops and cafe. In Brashten there is cable TV, internet and mobile phone coverage. The village has three GPs and a dentist. The nearest hospital is located in the town of Dospat.

Between Brashten and Cruncha above the river Dospat there is a Roman bridge, which is partly preserved.

Dospat dam is located some 19 km. The dam is the highest in Bulgaria and from there opens beautiful panoramic views. It is rich in fish and has excellent facilities for sport and commercial fishing.

Attractions in the area that you can visit: - "Trigrad Gorge" (50 km), "Yagodinska Cave" (48 km) "Buynovsko Gorge" (45 km), "Devil's Throat Cave" (51 km).
