The Museum of Varna’s History
The building the exposition of the Museum of Varna’s History is kept in was renovated in 1851 to house the Consulate of Belgium. Later on the building was used as a hotel, and from the end of the 19th century until the year of 1929 it was used as a prison.
The Museum was created in 1969. The exposition occupies three floores with a total area of 600 sq. m. and represents the development of Varna as a primary sea-port, commercial-industrial, cultural and educational and recreational center for the period of 1878 through 1939.
There the visitors could get acquainted with the one of its kind exposition, revealing the atmosphere of “old” Varna. In the halls there are restored original objects, craftsmen workshops, a hotel room, a pastry shop, an inn, a photography atelier, a legal office, a hatter’s shop, a book shop, a toy shop, a radio shop, a part of the beach with a dressing-box, a living room made of reed and a courtyard of an old Varna house.
One could also see the stages through which Varna has gone to obtain its European architectural outlook and to turn into an international sea resort and a summer capital of the Bulgarian culture. On display are original photographs of old buildings and streets, samples of architectural elements, articles from the Euxinograd palace.
Exhibited is also the grand piano, purchased in 1926 for the opening of the first International Musical Festival in Bulgaria – known today as the Varnensko Lyato /Varna Summer/ International Music Festival.
