Location:  Burgas Region, Pomorie

The museum of salt is the only museum of its kind not only in Bulgaria but also in the whole Eastern Europe. It is located in Pomorie, Burgas Region, on a narrow rocky peninsula recessed 3,5 km in the Black sea, about 23 km north-east of Burgas, 21 km south-west of Sunny beach, 113 km in the same direction of Varna and about 410 km east of the capital Sofia city.

The museum was officiallty opened on 7 September 2002 and is entirely dedicated to the production of salt by solar evaporation of sea water - a method widely known as "ancient Anhialo technology".

history

Salt produstion near Pomorie is an activity which has for centuries provided the livelihood of local people. According to historical sources salterns near Pomorie existed before the founding of the city /around the V century BC/. In ancient times salt was a valuable commodity - rare and expensive - therefore it was called "white gold". Up to the 30s of XX century Pomorie remained the only center of salt production in Bulgaria.

The Salt Museum in Pomorie is а specialised open-air museum, i.e visitors can see both the museum building and the adjacent 20 acres of salterns, where salt is still mined. Salterns represent multiple pools, each separated by wooden-bulk dikes where salt is produced by the same technology it was produced centuries ago.

Visitors can take a look at the rich collection of photographs from the early twentieth century as well as copies of documents from the period XV - XIX century telling of salt production and trade in the Bulgarian lands. One of the most interesting exhibits in the exhibition are the authentic salt tools such as salt wooden carts, rakes, etc. Furthermore, in the museum building you can also see films dedicated to salt production.

As the lake of Pomorie, within which borders the salterns are located, is a protected area with over 200 species of birds, special cameras are placed in salterns that monitor the birds bahavior and allow visitors to watch the birds of the screens in the museum. Part of the birds' migratory way Via Pontica passes over the museum.

Here you can byu additional information materials and souvenirs.

The museum of salt is part of the 100 National Tourist Sites. A campaign for improving the cultura attraction's quality has started since March 2013. Until the renovation lasts, the exhibition has been placed in the Museum of History in Pomorie.
