The Regional History Museum in Stara Zagora town is one of the oldest museums in Bulgaria and one of the largest in Europe. In it are preserved over 120 000 cultural artefacts. The first exhibition was opened in 1907. In September 2007 the museum was moved to new building in the center of the town and it was ready to greet visitors in March 2009.

Today the Stara Zagora museum maintains and helps a number of other historical objects in town Neolithic settlements (sixth century BC.), Ancient Forum Complex II-IV century, Late Antiquity residential home with mosaic, the fourth century, Ancient public building with mosaics, in IV-VI century in the Postal Auditors' convent Hilendarski "museum" nineteenth Century Urban Life and others. The institution keeps over 100,000 genuine artifacts from different eras.
Valuable are most of the collections - the prehistoric, the ethnographic and numismatic, the collection of Thracian chariots from ancient bronze, glass, relics connected with the history of the Bulgarian people from the Renaissance till nowadays. Unique are the exhibited bone idol and the made of marble human like figure fifth century BC, helmet, Sarmatian sword, golden necklace, lanterns, glass phial with dancing lady on it, marble collection of objects connected to Orpheus, stone plaque of a lioness and its curb from XI century, copy of the  Paisii's "Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya" etc.

Over the years the museum has managed and participated in dozens of archaeological expeditions which are of particular concern excavations Azmashkata mound (the first comprehensive studied mounds settlement in the Balkans), the prehistoric copper mines in the area of ​​Mechi well near Stara Zagora (Bulgarian-Russian expedition) on multilayered historical site in the area Chatalka, dozens of archaeological sites in the reserve "Augusta Trayana more faithful-Boruy" of late antique road station near Karasura Rupkite village, Chirpan (Bulgarian-German expedition), many tombs and more.

Stara Zagora museum maintains international contacts with more than 20 museums, universities and libraries in Germany, England, Russia, Romania, Austria, Macedonia, France, Greece, Hungary and others.
The directors of the museum are members of the international museum organization UNESCO - ICOM. In 1984 Stara Zagora was host of the VIII International Symposium on ancient bronze, during it reports are made by the scientists from 30 countries worldwide. The museum in Stara Zagora participated in issued in Vienna hulls of ancient mosaics and frescoes from Bulgaria. It is an organizer or co-organizer of international, national and regional scientific conferences, symposia and colloquia. Museum of Stara Zagora is one of the participants in the preparation and establishment of a scientific documentary "The Birth of Europe" that has been initiated by the BBC, England. It shows the technology of production of copper during the fourth millennium BC, in it are shot Neolithic settlements from the sixth millennium BC and a prehistoric mound.

The Regional History Museum in Stara Zagora town is part of the list of the 100 National Tourist Sites.

Chuprene Biosphere Reserve
