Shabla is a town in North-Eastern Bulgaria, a municipal center, part of Dobrich region. It is located 80 km to the north from the city of Varna, 20 km away from the town of Kavarna, 18 km away from Durankulak and 5 km away from Shabla Cape.
The climate is maritime and is characterized by a mild and windy winter with scanty snowfalls, a sunny spring, a cool summer and a rainy autumn. The relief is predominantly flat. The population numbers to approximately 3 600 people. Altitude - 47 m.
The name of the settlement has remained unchanged since 1573 when it was initially mentioned in an official document.
A Thracian settlement dated back to the 6th-5th century BC used to exist on the territory of Shabla. During the time the territory was part of the Roman Empire there used to be a port. It was strategically located on the road from Kavarna to Mangalia and was of great importance - a Roman fortress named Karia was built to protect the settlement. In early Byzantine times Shabla was significant for the trade and traditional crafts being developed on its territory.
In Shabla there is a school, an Orthodox church,a community center, various types of shops, cafes, restaurants, smal hotels, guest houses, a kindergarten, doctor's and dentist's offices and all modern conveniences and communications - internet, satellite TV, digital telephone exchange, coverage of all mobile operators.
A functioning sewerage system is available in the town. A plan for central gas-supply has been approved for the settlement. The roads are in a very good condition. Regular bus transportation connects Shabla to the regional center of Dobrich, the city of Varna and the nearby villages.
Nowadays Shabla is an agricultural center, due to the fertile soil and the abundance of water from Shabla Lake. The climate is favourable for the grain and industrial crops. Local people engaged into the production of fruits and vegetables are offering their products which are famous for being of high quality, grown in a natural way in an ecologically clean environment.
The tourism is developing turbulently, as well. The town has its own atmosphere and offers to its guests the rare privilege to enjoy serenity, peacefulness and beautiful, clean beaches.
No large holiday complexes are available in Shabla.
During WWII many sea vessels and submarines have sunk near the town, which attracts scuba divers from near and far. A yacht club is set near Shabla famous for being the starting point of the annual Black Sea yacht-regatta.
