The village of Sbor

Sbor is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

In Bulgaria there is one more village with the same name - in the municipality of Pazardzhik, Pazardzhik Region.

It is located about 27 km north-east of Krumovgrad, about 75 km south-east of the town of Kardzhali and approximately 293 km from the capital Sofia city.

It is located in a mountainous area at an altitude about 350 m. The climat is transitive - Mediterranean, which determines the mild winter and long, hot summer.

The population is about 5 people.

The village of Sbor is located on one of the busiest roads in Bulgaria - II 59 Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad - Ivaylovgrad, which is one of Southern Bulgaria’s major thoroughfares.

Primary school you can find in the neighboring village of Belopoltsi /11 km in the south-east/ and the nearest secondary school is located in Krumovgrad. There is a kindergarten in the village of Belopoltsi as well. Specialized medical care town can be obtained on the territory of the municipal town.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In the village of Chal /14 km south of Sbor/ you can see the oldest mosque in the Eastern Rhodopes.

The area Ilia's field is located 25 north-east of Sbor, in the village of Glumovo. A memorial to honour the 40000 Thracian refugees who died there, was built. The memorial consists of a chapel, a monument and a fountain and is used annually as the location of the National Youth Thracian fest - Thracian child's day, held every year on 1st June - the International Day for the Protection of Children.

In the village of Rogach / 23 km south of Sbor / is situated the Rock tomb - sanctuary, locatedon a cliff on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. This archaeological site is revered by locals as sacred as there are the two small holes on the rocks resembling human steps, which are called “The steps of Ali" (a Muslim saint).

In the area of the village of Oreshari /12 km in the north/ is located the picturesque place "Oreshari" declared protected in order to preserve the rare flora and fauna species that inhabit it. There are many archaeological sites in the area as well, some of which have historical importance. Such are:

  • Medieval rock monastery "Reverend Martin’s hole”, declared a cultural monument of national importance;
  • Thracian rock niches, also declared a cultural monument;
  • Caves in the "Bridge" area /The Six caves / - natural landmark included in the list of the 250 most famous caves in Bulgaria
