The village of Vrelo

Vrelo is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in the municipality of Momchilgrad, Kardzhali region.

It is located at 10 km east of Momchilgrad, about 25 km south-east of the regional center Kardzhali, about 70 km south-west of Haskovo and about 265 km south-east of the capital Sofia city.

The village is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes at altitude of about 550 m. The climate is temperate to Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. 

The village's name was Tashkanlar until 1934. Here live approximately 130 people.

Vrelo is provided with water and electricity. The infrastructure is settled with partly asphalted and lighted streets. There are a mosque and a grocery store here.

Primary school, kindergarten and community center you will find in the near village of Raven /6 km in the north/. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP and one dentist again there. The nearest health centers are in Momchilgrad. 

TOURIST SITES

In the village of Vrelo, near Chalakyoy neighbourhood, you can visit the tomb of Isman baba - a saint, warshiped by the local muslims. Every September at that site a traditional fair is held. The fair is visited by people from the neighbouring villages as well.

There are numerous natural and cultural attractions in the area around the village:

  • Near the village of Raven is situated the natural phonomenon "Petrified forest". It is located in a deep valley called by locals "Gabaz dere." The site was declared protected in the "natural landmark" category. It represents fossilized trees and is about 30 million years old. During the summer months, the "Petrified Forest" is often visited by biologists, naturalists and eco-tourists.
  • "Borovets" reserve, situated also near the village of Raven, is one of the four reserves in the Eastern Rhodopes and is of national importance. It was declared a protected site in order to protect the easternmost natural habitat of pine. The flora is fairly well studied - pine, oak vergiliev, oak, wild pear, apple, prickly juniper and others, as well as fauna, some of which are in Bulgaria's Red Book and are protected in European and world scale.
  • The archaelogical landmark "Orpheus' sanctuary" is located only 10 km north-east of Vrelo, near the village of Tatul. This is one of the most remarkable architectural discoveries of our time. The complex comrises an ancient pagan sanctuary and a medieval fortress.
  • In the village of Bovilyane /14 km in the north/ is situated the alian complex "Emala baba" is situated in the village. It is one of the earliest dated complexes in the Eastern Rhodopes - it was built in XVII century. An inscription in the yard near the tomb says that there is buried Gunnar baba - the son of the Bektashi Father Emala baba, whose name is complex wears, was buried there. The tomb comprises six graves under one roof and a octahedral resette on the ceiling. The grave of Fatma - prophet Ali's wife, revered as the protector of mothers and children, is situated nearby. The largest Alevi gathering in this part of the Rhodopes is held here each year in the beginning of September.
