LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

At the eastern end of the village of Gorna krepost you can visit the Alian tomb of Hizir baba. According to the beliefs of the local people, a reputable Alian saint was buried here.

High in the rocks, about 4 km south-east of the village of Dolna krepost, rises the archeological complex of 'Perperikon'. It is claimed the complex used to be a sanctuary of Dionysus (the god of Wine, Theatre and Ecstasy in Greek mythology).

In the village of Stremtsi you can visit the famous ancient gold mines, known as 'Inikler' cave. They are located about 200 m away of the main road Kardzhali-Haskovo, after the micro-dam between the villages of Rani list and Stremtsi. The mine workmanships are hewn in very strong rocks, without any use of pillar. They follow the ore-bearing lead and resemble a labyrinth. At the end of the galleries is located a small lake. The site is easily accessible, but it is not recommendable to go in there without any guide who knows the disposition of the galleries
