Guliyka is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located at about 8 km south-east of Krumovgrad, 56 km in the same direction of the regional center Kardzhali and about 319 km east of the capital Sofia city.

Guliyka is located in an area with mountainous relief at an altitude about 400 m. It is part of the transitional-Mediterranean climate zone. Winters are mild and summers - long and hot.

The population of Guliyka is about 130 people.

The village is located only 2 km away from the main road II 59 Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad - Ivaylovgrad, one of the most important thoroughfares in Southern Bulgaria which connects the region with the national transport network.

The proximity of Guliyka to the main road II 59 determines its relatively good infrastructure. Most of the streets are paved, the village has electricity and water supply systems and is included in the automatic telephone dialing system. The village of Guliyka is served by regular bus transport.

There is a town hall in Guliyka as well as a shop, an operating elementary school with adjoined kindergarten group and a community center. The nearest secondary school and kindergarten are located in the municipal town. Medical care can be obtained again in the municipal town where two medical facilities operate – a multiprofile hospital for active treatment and a health center.

The main occupation of the people is tobacco.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In the village near Guliyka, Rogach, located about 6 km to the west, the architectural landmark Rock tomb - sanctuary, known among locals as Guyu or Kuyu, can be seen. The sanctuary is located on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. The site is revered as sacred as two small holes resembling human steps were found on the rocks. These tracks are called “The steps of Ali" (Muslim saint).

At about 19 km north of Guliyka in the village of Dzhanka, can be visited one of the waterfalls of the River Dushan dere declared a natural landmark - "The Waterfall" - the highest waterfall in the protected region of Kardzhali. The waterfall is 25 m high. At about 10 km east of the village of Guliyka, near the village of Chal, is situated another protected waterfall - "Mandrata," located on the River Tashbunar Dere.

The cultural monuments located in Krumovgrad are also of interest to tourists - the remains of a fortifying wall, part of the foundations of a fortified village, the mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi", built in 1855 on the foundations of an old wooden mosque from XVI - XVIII century and considered to be one of the main reasons for the existence of the town of Krumovgrad and the villages that surround it, and the museum collection containing over 2000 exhibits, located in a house declared a cultural monument.

The traditional cultural festivals "The Lights of Krumovgrad", held annually on the eve of May 24, are the most significant cultural event in Krumovgrad, an event with a 25-year history. The annual Folk Festival held in Krumovgrad is especially attractive. Individual performers, singing and dance groups present local Rhodope, Thracian and Turkish songs and dances as part of the festival.
