Village of Lilyanovo

Lilyanovo is a village situated in South-western Bulgaria. It is part of Sandanski Municipality, Blagoevgrad region.

Lilyanovo is 71 km south-west from town of Blagoevgrad, 4 km north-east from town of Sandanski, 27 km north-west from town of Melnik, 157 km south from city of Sofia and 30 km north from the Bulgarian-Greek border at village of Kulata.

Its population is approximately 220 people.

Lilyanovo spreads out the western slopes of Pirin Mountain, at 676 m above sea level. Sandanska Bistritsa River passes near the village. On the river in north-eastern direction are located the hydroelectricity stations Lilyanovo and Popina laka (from the hydroelectricity cascade Sandanska Bistritsa).

The climate is transitional-Mediterranean with slight mountainous influence. It characterizes with warm summer and mild winter.

The natural conditions are favourable for industrial crops growing and stock-breeding. The population extracts granite with opencast method above the village.

Lilyanovo is a well-developed village. It is provided with electricity and water. It comprises a town-hall, a community centre (with women folk singing group and library), a pensioner's club, a football stadium and shops. Health services and education centres are available in town of Sandanski.

Tourism

The village is set on the road leading to the resort place of Popina laka, which is the starting point for the tourist marches in Pirin Mountain. There are several mountain hostels - Popina laka, Kamenitsa and Turichka cherkva. The tourists may visit the temple of St Prophecy Iliya and the beautiful Popinolashki waterfall. In close proximity is located the park region 'Kamenitsa' of Pirin National Park where the highest peak of Pirin rises - Vihren (2914 m).

Just 10 minutes by car is the municipal centre - town of Sandanski. It is famous balneological centre. The unique climate and the mineral springs attract the tourists all-year-round.

Town of Melnik is just 27 km away of the village. Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria. It is famous with its Melnishki sand pyramids and wine cellars.
