The village of Sladkodum

Sladkodum is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 25 km north of Krumovgrad, 70 km east of Kardzhali and approximately 294 km in the same direction of the capital Sofia city. The neighbouring village of Potochnitsa is situated about 12 km in the north-west.

The village is situated in a region of mountainous and hilly relief at an altitude of 230 m. The climate is continental - Mediterranean, summers are long and hot and winters - relatively mild. The rivers Arda and Krumovitsa pass near the village.

The permanent population is about 2 people.

The roads in Sladkodum are in relatively good condition, there are electricity and water supply systems, the mobile operators have coverage. Bus transport connects it with the surrounding villages.

The nearest elementary school, kindergarten and community center are located in the village of Potochnica.  Medical assistance can be obtained again there, there is one GP working in the village. Secondary school and general hospital one can find in Krumovgrad.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

A rock tomb - a typical example of Thracian megalithic culture, was found near the village of Motyantsi /5 km in the north-west/. Numerous rocky niches with trapezoidal shape are carved around the tomb. Those were the place where the Thracians laid the dust of their dead or sacrificed to the gods.

At 37 km to the east, near the village of Oreshari, is situated the picturesque area "Oreshari" which has been declared protected in order to preserve the rare flora and fauna species that inhabit it. There are many archaeological sites in the area as well, some of which have historical importance. Such are:

  • Medieval rock monastery "Reverend Martin’s hole”, declared a cultural monument of national importance;
  • Thracian rock niches, also declared a cultural monument;
  • Caves in the "Bridge" area /The Six caves / - natural landmark included in the list of the 250 most famous caves in Bulgaria

Only 16 km to the west is situated the Studen Kladenets Dam - the third largest dam in Bulgaria, offering excellent conditions for fishing and suitable for recreation and water sports during the summer.
