The village of Samokitka

Samokitka is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is located in the municipality of Kirkovo, Kardzhali Region.

The village is located 16 km north-east of Kirkovo, 35 km south-east of Kardzhali and about 275 km in the same direction of the capital Sofia city. The town of Momchilgrad is located at 20 km in the north and the villages of Podkovaand Chorbadzhiysko - at 6 ans 9 km respectively in the west and south-west.

It is situated in an area with hilly and foothill relief at an altitude of 589 meters. The climate is transitional-Mediterranean, winters are relatively mild and summers are long and hot.

The permanent population is about 80 people.

The village is  landscaped. The mobile operators have coverage. Bus transport connects the village with the municipal center and the neighbouring villages.

The village of Samokitka is situated a few kilometers away from European road E-85, part of transeuropean transport corridor #9 - an important thoroughfare with major contribution to the economic development of the region.

There is a mosque here. The nearest functioning secondary school, community center and kindergarten are in the village of Chorbadzhiysko. Besides, you will find a bank branch and a post office there. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP and one dentist in the village of Podkova and the nearest polyclinic is located in the village of Kirkovo. General hospital you can find in the town of Momchilgrad.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Near the village of Sekirka /2 km in the south/ a fortress built of rough stones was found. There are also fragments of pottery of Old-iron age. A copper boiler, several small clay amfors and a bronze figure of a horseman were found during the destruction of a tomb.

In the village of Benkovski, about 24 km in the west, you can see a few sites:

  • the renovated mosque in the center of the village where Muslims from all over the region gather to pray;
  • the venerable oak, over 200 years old, declared protected;
  • a rocky area, where the elements have for centuries carved the huge stones in a variety of bizarre rock forms of animals and plants, the most interesting of which are "The Crocodile", "The Mushroom", "Lion's Head", etc.
