Town of Breznik

Breznik is a town in West Bulgaria. It is situated in Pernik region and it is in proximity to the towns Bankya and Pernik. It is the third largest town in the municipality right after Pernik and Radomir and also is municipality center.

Location and climate

It is situated 22 km northwest of the town of Pernik and 56 km west of the town of Bankya. The capital Sofia is 44 km east.

The area is adjacent to Viskyar mountain and to the south and southwest are Lyubash and Cherna gora mountains. The altitude is about 750 m. The climate is temperate and is characterized by temperature inversions in the valleys.

History

Breznik is town with long history and it was founded by Tsar Petar. There are remains from the Thracian period and also from the Roman times there are left many tomb plates and many pictures, mounds and coin deposits. From the age of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Ottoman rule there are ruins, churches and monasteries.

In the town is built memorial complex honoring the fallen in the Serb-Bulgarian war while defending the town. Breznik played important role in the life of the Bulgarian state. There are many Medieval monuments of Culture.

In almost all settlements there are churches from the Renaissance and war monuments with national and local significance.

Education and infrastructure

The permanent population of the town of Breznik is about 4154 people and the residents of the municipality are about 7097.
The small kids and the students can go to two high schools - "Vasil Levski" and the Vocational School "N. Vaptsarov" and two kindergartens.
Here is functioning community center "Prosvestnenie" and its main priorities are the library, the art section and cultural and educational, as well as small museum exhibition.

The water for everyday needs are provided by Krasava dam and the network Sekirna - Breznik and local water sources with sewerage stations in Breznik. In the town there is constructed sewerage system. All settlements are with constructed electricity systems. The state of the roads of the local areas is good. Through the municipality pass roads from the republican infrastructure.

In the town of Breznik is located the hospital "D-r Y. Stefanov" and it is with capacity 20 beds. For the health of the people take care also two dentists and two pharmacies.

Cultural and natural landmarks

The church St Petka is of great importance, also the school of old type, the megalithic temple with well Pusto Garlo, Tsarnogorksi and Bilinski monasteries, and the remains of Medieval churches, houses with architectural and art value, the non detached house in the village of Kosharevo, the chardaklii houses in the village of Razhavets.

Near the town there is Roman bath and Thracian holy place (temple of the Sun that once a year is lighted right at the spot of the center of the temple).

The church "St Petka" in the town of Breznik there are two Orthodox temples - St Petka from the end of XV century and the temple St George Pobedonosets that was found in 1948.
The temple of St Petka is ancestor of the Medieval Bulgarian monastery that was there until XV century. The ottomans called it Mateala while the Bulgarians called it Svetata Maika. It was burned by Kara Feiz in 1814 and then rebuilt in 1818. To the end of XIX c. in the town there was cell of the Rilski monastery.

Bardoto area offers great views from the landscape. It is with mineral spring Zhelyazna water is with water that is rich in ferriferous and sulphate ions and is suitable for the treatment of anemia, stomach diseases, liver and skin eczemas. 

The Surova custom is one of the merriest winter festivals of the people that live in Breznik municipality. It is organized annually on the 13-th and 14-th of January at the villages of the municipality. The custom is with ancient tradition and is done against the evil powers in the world for health and good harvest and it has preserved its symbolism almost unchanged.

Each year on Vidovden is organized gathering that once took more than three days.
