Kocherinovo Municipality is situated in the southwestern part of the Republic of Bulgaria on both sides of the middle course of the Strouma River. The relief is varied comprised of mountains, hollows, gorges and river valleys. The mountainous and semi-mountainous territories occupy 44.52 % of the total area of the Municipality. 14 micro-dam lakes have been constructed in Kocherinovo Municipality. Kocherinovo Municipality is crossed by main road Е -79 Sofia - Koulata, which is also the only road to the Rila Monastery. Railway transport is also developed and it includes the Sofia - Athens railway line. An optic cable Sofia - Greece passes through the Municipality.
Economy and business
Several tailoring shops operate in Kocherinovo town and in the villages of Porominovo, Moursalevo and Stob. The Municipality has municipal terrains for rent or sale, suitable for production and trade activities; it also has approximately 54,000,000 sq. m of unused farming land, and 42% of the total area of the Municipality constitutes the forests fund, which is a prerequisite for the development of agriculture, wood logging and wood processing industry.
Natural sights and monuments of culture
The excavations of an ancient Roman temple to god Sebaziy, a part of the ancient Sportela city. There are about 15 caves in the region of Tsarkvishte village and Frolosh village; in some of them drawings on the walls dating back to the Paleolith have been discovered. The house, where the artist Vladimir Dimitrov - the Master was born, is in Frolosh village. Regretfully the house is completely ruined. The Municipality possesses a number of natural sights (the Stob pyramids, numerous stork nests, the unique nature, etc.)
Environmental protection and tourism
The water treatment plant in Kocherinovo town is being constructed at present; it will serve Kocherinovo Municipality and Rila Municipality. A major problem of the Municipality is the waste collection and the lack of companies to process the waste. The location of the Municipality on the main road to the Rila Monastery is conducive to the development of hotel and catering activities. Large numbers of Bulgarian and foreign tourists pass through Kocherinovo town every day. Tourism should be developed in the Municipality as a priority sector.
