Montana Region is located in North-West Bulgaria. To the North the region borders the Danube river and thus creating natural conditions for connections with Romania and the other countries along the river. To the South-West it borders Serbia and Sofia Region, to the East - Vratsa and to the North-West - Vidin region.

Montana region consists of 130 villages and towns, divided in 11 municipalities. The population is approximately 184 00 people.

The rivers Ogosta, Cibrica and Lom are passing through the region.  On Ogosta river is the biggest dam lake in Bulgaria, and one of the biggest on the Balkan peninsula - Ogosta Dam lake. There are also number of micro dam lakes in the region - 56, to be precise.

The climate in Montana region characterizes cold winter- the snowfalls are usually during December, January and February, but the summer is hot. The spring usually comes in the middle of March, and the autumn is comparatively warm and last longer. One of the highest summer temperatures in Bulgaria was measured in Montana region: 45оС in town of Boychinovtsi

Montana region is linked to all the populated areas in Bulgaria as well as the border points of the country by railway and road transport.

history

Montana is a region with milleniums of history, numerous historical and cultural monuments, clean environment and places for tourism and holiday. The geographic location is beneficial for its developing as a transport, cultural and tourist centre.

South of Montana one can see the remains of the old Roman fortress Kastra ad Montanezium. This is actually where the name of the town came from. Most of the finds, found there are kept in the Historicam museum of Montana.

Only 22 km west of the city is Lopushanski monastery. One shouldn't miss Montana dam lake - a wonderful place for fishing, sports, water tourism. There are numerous restaurants and small hotels nearby.

Very significant for the development of the town are themineral baths in Varshets.
