Tzarkva village

Tzarkva (meaning "a church" in Bulgarian) is a village in north-eastern Bulgaria, part of Balchik municipality, Dobrich region. It is located 34 km away from the city of Varna, 30 km away from the town of Dobrich, 20 km away from the town of Balchik, 8 km away from Albena resort and 18 km away from Golden Sands resort.
Its population numbers to approximately 500 people. The climate is temperate-continental - the winter is not as cold, and the summer is cool. The relief is various - rolling green hills and vast fields are alternating, right next to the village lies a magnificent deciduous forest. Altitude - 79 m.
The village of Tzarkva is located over the forth largest manganese ore deposit in the world. A manganese mine is operating on the territory of the village.

history

According to the Czech archaeologist Carel Skorpil an early Byzantine fortress was built near the village. The former Roman road to the sea known as Via Pontica used to pass through the ridge of the hill, rising nearby. Many large clay utensils for grain preservation were found by the locals in the 50s and 60s of the past century, while ploughing their fields.
There are several versions for the meaning of the Turkish name of the village - Ali Klise. As per the locals it means "a white church". According to other sources it should be translated as "the colourful /decorated/ church".
During the Romanian occupation the village was located right next to the border, which passed through the ridge south of the village.

infrastructure and prospects

Tzarkva is a big, lively and very well developed village. There is a mayor's office, food shops, a doctor's office, a post office and a fully renovated, modern kindergarten.
In spite of its name there never was a church in the village. There was a small chapel in the southern part of the village which has been demolished. A project has been developed for its restoration. The area is famous for a small well of curable water which, even nowadays, brings people from near and far.
On March 25th, 1965 the manganese mine in the village started to function. It provides a good living for a third generation of Tzarkva inhabitants already.
All modern communications are offered in the village - telephone, internet, cable TV and coverage of all mobile operators. The infrastructure is very well-organized. A quick and easy access is provided to Dobrich, Varna and Balchik. The village offers to its inhabitants all modern conveniences combined with a beautiful nature, serenity and peacefulness.
Traditionally, the main occupation of the local people is the stock-breeding. The green pastures, the plenty of water and the nearby forest provide excellent conditions for its development.
No people are leaving the village, nor there are jobless people in Tzarkva. Most of the inhabitants are engaged into the mine or the nearby Black sea resorts Albena and Golden Sands, as the mine-workers are occupied year-round.
Many English, Russian and Bulgarian families have purchased houses in the village. Three British families are living in Tzarkva year-round and their children are attending a Bulgarian school. There are no deserted houses in the village, many new houses are being built instead.
Due to its proximity to the Black Sea resorts Albena and Golden Sands, the intriguing scenery and the favourable climate the village offers excellent conditions for the development of rural tourism.
