The village of Kladnitsa

See it on the map Bulgarian properties in Pernik Region - Kladnitsa

Location

The village of Kladnitsa is located 25km from the centre of Sofia, in the immediate proximity of Vitosha Natural Park and overviewing the south slopes of Vitosha Mountain.

Located in the mountain itself, the village is the starting point of many tourist tracks. The former residence at the Studena dam-lake has now become an exclusive hunting reserve in which a lot of wide animals can be observed - deer, wild boar, bear, etc. Riding and fishing opportunities are also available. The village has good prospects and enjoys investment interest for developing tourism and extreme sports (mountain motorcycling and winter sports).

The neighbouring village of Rudartsi, located 4km to the north-west, has a swimming complex with three open and one covered pools with mineral water, sauna, basketball and football playgrounds and a tennis court. The hot mineral water springing from the outskirts of the village make it a preferred resort area.

Regular bus lines run from/to Sofia and Pernik.

Cultural Landmarks

Kladnishka Fortress
Kladnishka Fortress is located on the south-western slopes of Vitosha Mountain. Archeological excavations have revealed that it is built in the 5-6th century.
The place where the fortress was located is a strategic one. It is the very ridge of a hill surrounded from all sides by steep slopes. Moreover, it had a visual contact with other strongholds in the vicinity.
The Kladnishka Fortress is one of the big fortresses in Bulgaria. The total area of the territory enclosed by the fortress walls is about 100 sq.m. the remains of the walls are with average height 0,70m.
The fortress once had a major function and has belonged to a network og mountain fortresses guarding the approaches to Serdika. According to the Byzantine chronicles, at the conquer of Serdika by Khan Krum and its incorporation into the Bulgarian Kingdom, the Bulgarians destroyed all adjacent fortresses. Most probably this was the time of its first destruction.
Many arrow, javelin ends, knife blades, glassware, coins, ceramic pots and other finds have been found in the area.  Ruins of a basilica and the military buildings are uncovered at 1,5 m depth.

A few hundred meters away from the fortress is the Kladnitsa Monastery.

St. Nikolay Mirlikiyski the Wonderworker Monastery
The monastery is settled to the east of Kladnitsa village, situated at the west foot of Vitosha Mountain, on the two banks of Tanchovnitsa river. Little is known about its development through the centuries since no written evidence about it has been preserved. The monastery was founded in the 13th century and destroyed during the Ottoman Rule. It was rebuilt in the 19th century (1841) by a man named Spas from the village of Murchaevo and has been functioning ever since. The monastery consists of a church and residential and service buildings. Some of the monastery's murals were painted by the famous artist Konstantin Gerov about 1885.
