Granichar is a village in North East Bulgaria, part of Shabla municipality, Dobrich region. It is located 4 km to the west from Durankulak, 6 km to the south-west from Durankulak checkpoint, 23 km to the north-west from the town of Shabla, 92 km to the north-west from the town of Dobrich, 104 km away from the city of Varna and 8 km away from the sea-coast.

The climate is temperate-continental, significantly influenced by the proximity of the Black Sea. The winter is mild, yet windy, the spring is sunny and cool, the summer is warm and the autumn - rainy. The relief is flat. The population numbers to approximately 140 people. The population comprises people of various ethnic groups are living in harmony and understanding. The former name of the village used to be Akandiy and according to official documents it exists since 1573. Altitude - 35 m.

In Granichar there are two food shops, a small pub and a community center. The village is supplied with water and electricity on a regular basis. Coverage of all mobile operators is available, as well as a digital telephone exchange. The roads are in a good condition. Regular public transportation connects the village to the municipal center of Shabla and the nearby villages. Granichar is a quiet and peaceful village, surrounded by beautiful nature. The proximity to Durankulak, the Durankulak Lake and the sea-coast offers countless opportunities for picnic, sunbathing, fishing, hiking or sightseeing.

development prospects

A private agricultural co-operation is engaged into the cultivation of the fertile lands on the territory of the village providing occupation for the younger inhabitants. Part of the population is engaged into fishing and vegetable-making. During the summer the village comes back to life as foreigners from Germany Czech Republic, England etc arrive to stay at the properties they have purchased there. A great number of Bulgarians also arrive to spent their summer vacation in Granichar.
Due to its favourable location the village provides excellent conditions for the development of cultural, fishing, rural and eco-tourism.

  • Durankulak Lake - It is one of the most intriguing and well preserved coastal wetlands in Bulgaria of international significance concerning the preservation of over 260 species of rare and endangered bird and plant species. Being located on the bird's migration path known as Via Pontica the wetland provides favourable conditions for rest and feeding of migratory birds, such as: the Little Bittern, the Ferruginous Duck, the Western Marsh Harrier etc. The populations of three kinds of waders are spending the winter there - the Greater White-fronted Goose, the Red-Breasted Goose and the Mallard. There are also big populations of Pygmy Cormorants and Great White Pelicans. The lake is the only natural habitat of wild carp in Bulgaria. Archaeological excavations in Durankulak are being carried out since 1974. On the west coast of the lake dug-outs have been revealed dated as back as 5 100 - 4 700 year BC, also tumuli dated back to 3 500-3 400 BC and a Sarmatian necropolis dated back to the late Antiquity. An Eneolithic acropolis tumulus has been revealed on the Big Island inside the Lake dated back to 4 600 - 4 200 BC which is a monument of national significance.A fortified settlement dated back to the Late Bronze Age has been revealed on the southern slope of the island. Some 26 m inside the rocks of the island  a Hellenistic cave temple of the goddess Cybele /third century BC/ - a rare and very significant finding. A fortified Proto-Bulgarian settlement used to occupy the entire island back in 9th-10th century AD.
