Gela is a village in South Bulgaria. It is in Smolyan Municipality, Smolyqn region.

Village of Gela is located in the heart of the Rhodope mountain, at 1450 m altitude in the Perelikskia part of the mountain.
Winter is mild and snowy, summer is cool and damp, autumn - long and warm.
It is 6 km from Shiroka Laka, 33 km northwest from the town of Smolyan,  about 21 km from the mountain resort Pamporovo and 250 km southeast from the capital city Sofia.
There is a bus transport to Gela.

The village is well developed, entire electrification. It has community center. The nearest schools are in the village of Shiroka laka, and the nearest general hospital is in the district town of Smolyan.

Although small and with a small population, Gela is a village with rich history and incredible scenery. Cozy guesthouses and family hotels in Gela make it one of the most preferred locations for rural tourism in the Rhodope Mountains.

There are two legends associated with the history of the area and village. The first is that it is the birthplace of Orpheus. It is also considered that he had come to search for Eurydice in the nearby Devil's Throat cave.

The second legend is related to the end of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It states that after the exile in Bachkovo monastery, Evtimii was buried at a hiding place in the local monastery. He was burned in the 17 century and razed to the ground.

Gela has two churches. The name of the new one is "St. Bogoroditsa". The old one was built in the place of once a monastery complex and is called "St. Troitsa".

One of the "cultural attractions" of the village is folk ensemble "Manol Radichev" - amateur performing stock in the most pure music and dance performances from local folklore.

One of the atractions fortourists is a traditional contest with bagpipes, which is held every first Sunday of August.

The village is known for healing mountain air. You feel the freshness of fyona - wind coming from the Aegean Sea. A belt air with negative ionization, which passes through this area is useful for people with lung diseases.

Among the most popular entertainments in Gela are the tours of the mountain bicycle and motorbike, the possibility of riding on steep terrain.

In the rivers near the village the most delicious trout, carp and also perch can be caught. Suitable place for passionate fishermen is Dospat.

It is no less enjoyable to stay at Gela and in the winter. During this season the conditions are perfect for relaxation. Pamporovo is nearby and transport is provided to it.

For the winter sports enthusiasts in the village there is a ski tow and a small runway at their disposal.
