Natural resources

Relief: The relief of the region is influenced by its borderline location between two physico-geographical areas - the Danube Plain and the Balkan. It is mostly hilly, diversified by plains, valleys and low elevations, strongly indented by the erosive processes of the running water of the rivers Golyama Reka and Stara Reka and their tributaries.
Climate: The climate of the Antonovo municipality is Temperate Continental. The average annual continuity of the sunshine is 2250 hours. The average annual temperature is about 7C its southern part because of the higher altitude there, and about 11C in its northern part.
Water Resources: The territory of the Antonovo municipality is comparatively poor in water resources due to the insufficient precipitation, the water-permeable rocks, the strongly rugged terrain and the small rivers flowing here. It is drained by the rivers Stara Reka and Golyama Reka. They have snow and rain regime. The water quantity is unevenly distributed throughout the year. Yastrebino Dam - the largest dam lake in the District of Targovishte - is situated in the northeastern part of the municipality.
Flora and Fauna: The forests occupy an area of 177 215 decares (over 30% of the municipality's territory). They consist entirely of deciduous species - oak, hornbeam, ash, birch and beech - and are mixed. They have been additionally afforested with coniferous plants. This resource of the Antonovo municipality is a good prerequisite for the development of more unpretentious forms of tourism - ecological, explorative, route tourism, etc. The forest vegetation in the municipality is complemented by bushes, meadows and pastures, which offer opportunities for gathering herbs, mushrooms and wild fruit. The natural meadows are a good basis for stockbreeding. The presence of deciduous and mixed forests offers favourable conditions for breeding large and small game - wild boars, deer, roes, hares, pheasants and partridges. Foxes, wild cats, martens, etc. also live there.

Economy

The economic life of the Antonovo municipality before 1989 was determined by the light industry (tailoring and knitting), woodworking and metalworking.
Now the municipality's industry is in a deep crisis. The only industrial enterprise is the Factory for Road Signs and Equipment, which is a joint venture with state participation. The municipal commercial company Polyane Ltd. functions on the municipality's territory with the following objects: tailoring, knitted-fabric, carpentry and woodworking production; farming produce, honey and bee products, wild fruit - production, purchase, processing and trade; passenger and freight transport, etc.

Tourism

The unpolluted nature, the soft winters and the pure river water in the Antonovo municipality are a good potential for the development of country, ecological and hunting tourism . The Roman Bridge and the old fortress add to the attractiveness of the region of the village of Stevrek. There are ideas about the foundation of a game reserve in the southwestern part of the municipality under the administration of the Bulgarian Hunting and Fishing Union. The waterside of Yastrebino Dam is an attractive area for short-time recreation because of the presence of comfortable beaches and the possibilities for fishing and water sports. There are prerequisites for the foundation of a tourist zone in the region of the village of Pirinets, connected with the beautiful nature along the valley of the Golyama Reka River and the presence of vacant living area in the villages of Pirinets and Ivancha. The existing base of the former pupils' training military camp in the village of Ivancha is an additional advantage. The material base, which was constructed in the past in commemoration of the partisan movement, is now used for other purposes. The Yastrebino National Children's Complex is used for various schools, training camps, etc. The inn of the Central Cooperative union, which in the past played an important role for tourism, has not been exploited after the privatization in 1992.
