LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

Near the village of Dyadovtsi /13 km in the west/ is situated a unique site known as the Devil's bridge /Sheytan kyupriya in Turkish/. The bridge was built at the beginning of XVI century and has not been reconstructed even once in the past 500 years. An engraved hexagon that researchers call "The Seal of Solomon" was found on the central arch of the Devil's bridge.

In the area Eagle rocks /Kartal kaya/, at about 12 km south-west of Yabalkovets, you can visit a Thracian sanctuary bearing the same name. The cult complex dates back to VI-IV century B.C. and was used during rituals and funerals. it represents a large rock with about 90 trapecoidal niches carved in it where pottery and tiles associated with the cult of the dead were layed.

The ruins of Kaleto fortress are also situated in the Eagle rocks area, 500 m away of the sanctuary. It was declared a protected site, monument of culture with local importance.

19 km north-west of Yabalkovets, near the village of Bashevo, The Krivus fortress can be visited. The fortress was built in the X century to protect the area around the Arda River in the Eastern Rhodopes. Exceptionally interesting are the remains of fortifying walls, reaching up to 5 meters, as well as the towers, the entrance of the fortress and the ruins of an ancient church, built in its center.

Close to The Krivus fortress, on a rocky peninsula on the left bank of the River Borovica is situated the Fortress of Patmos, also dating from the X century. The western wall of the fortress, which is best preserved, is of greatest interest to the tourists . After a series of archaeological studies, in the fortress were found the remains of a basilica and tower.
