Village of Vitina

Vitina is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Rudozem Municipality, Smolyan region.

It is located 11 km southwest from the town of Rudozem, 26 km southwest from the town of Madan, about 39 km south from the town of Smolyan, 55 km in the same direction from the resort Pamporovo and 285 km southeast from Sofia.
The village has a regular bus service to the town of Rudozem.

It is situated in the southeastern part of the Rhodope Mountains at 1045 meters altitude. The climate is temperate - continental. It is characterized by soft and long winters and cool summers.

The permanent population is about 170 people.

The village has a community center, shop and café. In the neighboring village Elhovets / 4 km northeast / you will find primary school, kindergarten, post office, community center, health center, several shops and two family hotels.
The nearest hospital is located in the town of Rudozem.

 

Surroundings and sights

Near Rudozem you can visit the following sites:

  • Medieval fortress "Koznik" - This interesting fort is situated on a cliff above the town of Rudozem. It can be reached by Eco trail "Kechi Kaya" - "Koznik". The castle is part of the whole system of fortresses. They were found many pieces of pottery from different eras and ancient Roman temple,
  • Ancient Temple under the mount "Gypsy gradishte",
  • Monastery "St. Elena" (formerly known as "Saint Irene") situated above the village Plovdivtsi / 8 km southeast /,
  • Church, "Virgin Mary",
  • Church "St. Todor" situated above village Ravninata / 12 km north /.

In the town of Madan, you can visit:

  • Cave - Museum "Sharenka". This is the first in Bulgaria Cave Museum.
  • Area Gabata - a small rock cave, there were found pottery pieces from different eras. Following the path on the cliff to reach the Thracian mines.
  • Nearby is the rock 'Rimpapa" -50 meters high, resembling a man with a cape. Behind it there are remains of an ancient settlement.
  • Area Kichikaya - old Bulgarian fortress later conquered by the Romans. There are old stone buildings and walls of the fortress wall. Fully preserved is also the well carved nine meters down the cliff.
