Visoka polyana is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

In Bulgaria there is one more village with the same name - in the municipality of Hitrino, Shumen Region.

It is located 15 km north-east of the town of Kardzhali, 27 km in the same direction of the town of Momchilgrad, 37 km south of Haskovo and 248 km south-east of the city of Sofia.

The village is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes, near Studen kladenets Dam. Its altitude is about 357 m. Regular bus transport connects it to the surrounding villages.

The population is approximately 335 people.

The village is provided with electricity and water and has relatively well-developed infrastructure. There are a mosque, a grocery store and a cafe here. The nearest post office, primary school, kindergarten and GP are in the village of Chiflik /2 km in the north/. Dentist you can find in the village of Shiroko pole /7 km in the south-west/. The nearest hospitals are in Kardzhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

In the area of the village of Visoka polyana is situated the protected area Sredna Arda. It was declared protected in order to preserve rare and endangered spieces of plants and animals as well as remarkable landshaft. The protected area is part of the Important Bird Area (IBA) "Studen kladenets" which has a global nature significance.

Near the village you can also visit the "Brazhlyanina" cave - a natural landmark inhabitet by a protected bat spieces.

One of the biggest and high situated fortresses in the Rhodope Mountains - 'Monyak' medieval fortress, is located above the village of Shiroko pole. Military garrison was located here, and the inhabitants along Arda River used to find shelter here during military actions. Marked path from Kardzhali exit (in Haskovo direction) leads to the fortress. The site is convenient for tourism.

Studen kladenets Dam is perhaps the most picturesque artificial lake in the Rhodopes. Its waters are suitable for fish breeding and water sports (rowing, water wheels).

The village of Visoka polyana is located only 8 km away of the rock Thracian palace of 'Perperikon'. The archaeological complex consists of large megalithic sanctuary, holy town and fortress.
