LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

About 18km away from Velikdenche there is the village of Vodenicharsko, near which is situated the "Mal Assar" fortress. The construction started in VI century, and in XI century it was finished and fortified. Near the fortress can be seen the so-called "Wind rock" - a hole which people pass through on May 6th - St.George's Day in Bulgaria.

Here again is located the interesting geological phenomenon "The Broken Mountain". It is a high hill with a big cut through the middle. It could be seen just before the "Tchamlaka"reserve. The left side of the hill has sunken about 80m compared to the right one. The distance between the two sides is about 600m. The fracture came as a result of a massive tectonic plates shift.

Only 17km away from Velikdenche, near the village of Lebed, is the Middle Age fortress "Ustra". It was built in X century. It is supposed that during emperor Constantine's VII (913-959) the stronghold had 3 battle towers, up to 3 floors each and having internal staircase (some of them preserved to this moment). During the archeological digs were found a lot of metal object, crocks and copper coins. In the foothills of the fortress are located the well-known Swan lakes, formed as a result of a few major earthquakes. The wild water lilies and some other rare plants could be seen in the lakes, making them an interesting tourist destination.
