Trigrad is a village in Bulgaria situated 20 km south from the town of Devin and about 40 km west from the town of Smolyan.

 

Location

The village of Trigrad is located in the heard of the Western Rhodopes, in one of the most beautiful Bulgarian plateau - the Trigrad one where the rivers Trigradska and Buynovska flow and form the Vucha river. The village is set not far from the border with Greece, on 1240 m altitude. The population of this picturesque place is about 850 people and the house are built on masiv rock hills.

History

Trigrad is a village with rich history - it originates from three Roman villages which gave its name - Trigrad or Triibria. Many Thracian caves and necropolises are found in the surroundings therefor the village is an attractive destination for tourists and archаelogists.

Natural resources



The area of the village Trigrad is characterized by diverse animal and plant world, combining virgin nature and rich cultural heritage and traditions.
It is famous for the largest and most picturesque gorge in the Rhodope Mountains, which is formed by the incision of the rivers into the rocks. Trigradsko Gorge is declared as protected area with many rock bridges and much more,  all located just a kilometer from the village Trigrad. It runs along the river Trigrad whose outflow is so tight and cuts into the rocks  which rise up to 350 meters height. From there it lowers sharply to the deep Cave Devil's Throat. There is is one the highest underground waterfalls in the Balkan Peninsula. Its entrance is similar to the Devil's head where it comes the name of the cave. There is set also one of the largest cave rooms, called plangent. The cave is famous for ancient Thracian legends, one of which is that there is the kingdom of Hades, where Orpheus came to save his beloved Eurydice. The cave is among the hundred national tourist sites.
Another place of interest is Yagodinska cave that is considered an ancient house skillfully master potter, living around the IV-millennium BC. The uniqueness of the cave comes from the many stalactites, stalagmites, stalactones, cave pearls and other colored rock layers ( named curtains, leopard skins ) which cover the cave's inside.

Tourism



There is a tourist cabin located in the village as well as private hotels and restaurants that offer traditional Rhodope dishes. Among the tourist attractions are the performances of the Thracian rites - the serpent exorcism / winter, Predsoy, Sredeleto and the festival Orphic mysteries. For fans of active rest the village offers riding and rock climbing with trained instructors.
