The village of Strandzhevo

Strandzhevo is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 40 km north-east of Krumovgrad, 57 km east of Kardzhali, 51 km south-east of Haskovo and about 281 km in the same direction of the capital Sofia city.

Strandzhevo is situated in a mountainous area at an altitude of 150 meters. The climate is continental -Mediterranean, winters are relatively mild and the summer - long and hot. The River Arda passes just one km ayaw from the village.

The population of Strandzhevo is about 500 people.

The village has well developed infrastructure – most of the streets are paved, there are electricity and water supply systems, all mobile operators have coverage. Direct bus transport connects the village of Strandzhevo with Haskovo as well as with the municipal center Krumovgrad. New renovated road leads to the neighboring village - Bryagovets.

There is a town hall in the village as well as a functioning, repaired elementary school, kindergarten and community center. There is also a post office. The nearest secondary school is located in Krumovgrad. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP while the nearest multiprofile hospital is in Krumovgrad.

Tobacco is the crop which has provided the livelihood of the population for years.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

About 4 km south-west of the village of Strandzhevo, at the influx of the River Arda and the River Krumovitza, is situated a beautiful valley about 1,000 meters wide. There, near the protected area "Oreshari", on a massive cliff (Kovan Kaya) many carved rock niches were found.They are located in several groups and their number exceeds 150. These monuments are associated with many Thracian settlements, forts, temples and rock cemeteries in this part of the Arda River.

The medieval rock monastery "Reverend Martin’s Hole"- a cultural monument of national importance, is located near the village of Strandzhevo. The tomb is visited by local people and,according to legend, is believed to be one of the legendary hideouts of Reverend Martin during the Ottoman rule. The priest used to set up ambushes of rich people who he attacked and robbed.

A tourist route starts from the village of Oreshari / 10 km south-west /. The route follows the River Arda and reaches the village of Strandzhevo. The route passes through he picturesque area "Oreshari" located in near the village. The area was declared protected in order to preserve habitats and populations of protected species of plants and animals. The area is calcareous, variegated with numerous karst features.

The Ivaylovgrad dam - one of the largest dams in Bulgaria, is located 30 km to the east . The waters of the dam are rich in fish: catfish, carp, zander, perch, chub, commonrudd, Danube bleack and other freshwater fish species, making it suitable for fishing. Moreover, the dam offers excellent conditions for water sports -the final of the Republican canoeing regatta is held here at the beginning of every June.
