Its population is approximately 170 people.

Sokolovtsi is set in the gorge of Byala reka, in the middle part of the Rhodopes Mountain, at 1016 m above sea level. The climate is influenced by the mountain and the Aegean Sea. Winter is mild and snowy and summer is cool and humid.

The main road Smolyan-Rozhen-Plovdiv passes through the village. There is a diversion for the village of Momchilovtsi which is 3 km up the mountain.

Sokolovtsi comprises a town-hall, a community centre with a library, a church, shops and guest houses. Health services and schools are available in village of Momchilovtsi and the regional town of Smolyan.

Nowadays the residents of the village are occupied mainly in the spheres of stock-breeding and agriculture. Many people breed sheep. There is a small workshop for 'boza' production (Bulgarian traditional beverage).

Tourism

Sokolovtsi is proud with its 40 bridges above Byala River which connect each house with the main road. Due to the numerous bridges the village is called 'The Rhodopes' Venice'. The old houses are very attractive as well. They are still in the typical Rhodopes' style. The guest houses welcome tourists, skiers and guests from town of Rozhen, Pamporovo ski resort and the neighbouring towns and villages.

The residents of the village organize walks in the mountain for the tourists. They also reveal the secrets of the local crafts - woodcarving, sewing Rhodopes' slippers, looming and preparing local meals.

During the Bulgarian Revival many chapels symbol of the preserved Christianity and St Petar and Pavel Church were constructed.

Momchilovski dol is an interesting reserve at the settlement of Sokolovtsi. It was created to protect the original pine-tree forest. There is an eco path.

Tourists may also visit the National astronomical observatory 'Rozhen', 'Hubcha' karst spring, Sakarska mountain top (St Nicola) and the neighbouring village of Momchilovtsi. Momchilovtsi is a famous tourist destination due to its beautiful nature and fresh mountainous air. The place is preferred for sport, walks, picnics, hunting, fishing, rock climbing and marches.
