Village of Satovcha

Satovcha is a village in South-western Bulgaria. It is administrative centre of Satovcha Municipality, Blagoevgrad Region.

It is 128 km south-east from town of Blagoevgrad, 180 km in the same direction from city of Sofia, 22 km west from town of Dospat, 28 km north-east from town of Hadzhidimovo and 30 km east from town of Gotse Delchev.

Satovcha spreads out the south-western part of the Rhodopes, at 1029 m above the sea level. Bistritsa River passes nearby. The relief is hilly and the climate - transitional-Mediterranean. Summer is warm and winter - mild.

The population is approximately 2 020 people.

Satovcha is with well-developed infrastructure. It is provided with electricity, water, sewerage system and communication equipment. There is a municipal building, a police station, a post office, doctors, dentists, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a community centre, a reserve, commercial areas and a hotel. The nearest multi-profile hospital is in town of Gotse Delchev (30 km away).

In 1844 was built the church 'St Nedelya', which is a monument of culture.

The region is with well-developed stock-breeding, tobacco, potato and mushroom growing. The main forest activities are forestation and logging.

Landmarks and tourism

The region of Satovcha is with rich cultural-historical inheritance and natural landmarks. Interesting are the rock phenomena and Roman bridges such as Draganovi rocks, the rock shape 'Steneto' in Kochanska River gorge, the rock shape 'Probitiyat kamak' /'Dupkata'/ connected with ancient healing rituals, area of Kaleto, Unden peak, and the Roman bridges at the villages of Kribul, Dolen, Pletena, Satovcha, Vaklinovo, Slashten and Bogolin.

Village of Dolen (8 km) is with statute of historical and architectural reserve. It includes 70 monuments of culture of the Bulgarian Revival period. The village has preserved its look from this period - the houses are set on steep terrain and cobblestone streets.

Dospat Dam (22 km) is located at the Rhodopes, on 1200 m above the sea level. The dam is the highest one in Bulgaria. It reveals splendid panoramic views of the area. It is rich of fish and provides excellent conditions for fishing.
