Pchelarovo village

Pchelarovo is a village in Dobrich region, part of General Toshevo municipality. It is located 65 km away from the city of Varna, 18 km away from the town of Dobrich, 13 km away from General Toshevo and 40 km away from the town of Balchik and the sea-coast.
The climate in the area is temperate-continental. The relief is ranging from flat to hilly. The former name of the village used to be Eli Bey.
A settlement was established here in the Thracian-Roman age. Many tombs and pieces of ceramic utensils dated back  to the first ages AD have been found near the village. Local people have reported finding dug-outs with well preserved house-ware. In the 50-s of the 20th century revealed in the yards of some houses in Pchelarovo were ceramic utensils, arrow tips, parts of tools dated back to the Middle Ages - the time of the First and the Second Bulgarian States.
At the end of the 20th century 60-s the population of the village numbered to 2000 people. Back then Pchelarovo was one of the largest villages in Dobrudja region.
Nowadays the population numbers to approximately 580 people. In the village there is a community center with a library, a kindergarten, grocery shops, a cafe, a doctor's office, a 150 year-old church. Preserved in the church are three old liturgical books, printed in the 19th century.
An English family has settled in Pchelarovo. The locals are predominantly occupied in vegetable-growing and gardening. As the name of the village hints ("pchela is the Bulgarian for "honey-bee") there are many bee-gardens near the village where high-quality and ecologically clean bee-honey is produced.
