The village of Oreshnitsa

Oreshnitsa is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of Kardzhali Municipality, Kardzhali Region.

It is located 15 km north-east of Kardzhali, 273 km in the same direction of Momchilgrad, 42 km south of Haskovo and 248 km south-east of the city of Sofia. The neighbouring village of Shiroko pole is situated 7 km in the south and the village of Chiflik - 11 km in the east.

The village is situated in the Eastern Rhodopes, near Studen kladenets Dam. Its altitude is about 438 m. Regular bus transport connects it to the surrounding villages.

The population is approximately 140 people.

The village of Oreshnitsa is provided with electricity and water and has relatively well-developed infrastructure. There are a mosque here. The nearest post office, primary school, kindergarten, community centre and dentist are in the village of Shiroko pole. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP in the village of Chiflik. The nearest hospitals are in Kardzhali.

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

A medieval necropolis from X-XIII century can be visited near the village of Skalishte /4 km in the south/. It is located 300 m above the ruins of a medieval church tomb studied in the 70's. It is situated on the banks of the river Byuyuk gorge / the big gully/, a tributary of Arda River.

In the areas of the villages of Zvezdelina /7 km in the south-east/ and Visoka polyana /11 km in the south-east/ is situated the protected area Sredna Arda. It was declared protected in order to preserve rare and endangered spieces of plants and animals as well as remarkable landshaft. The protected area is part of the Important Bird Area (IBA) "Studen kladenets" which has a global nature significance.

One of the biggest and high situated fortresses in the Rhodope Mountains - 'Monyak' medieval fortress, is located above the village of Shiroko pole. Military garrison was located here, and the inhabitants along Arda River used to find shelter here during military actions. Marked path from Kardzhali exit (in Haskovo direction) leads to the fortress. The site is convenient for tourism.
