Village of Mogilitsa

Mogilitsa is a village in South Bulgaria. It is located in Smolyan Municipality, Smolyan region.

The village is situated at about 26 km southwest from the city of Smolyan, 123 km south from the city of Plovdiv and 254 km southeast from the capital of Sofia.
Village of Mogilitsa is in a mountain area, near the Greek border, at the upper reaches of the river Arda. The altitude is 920-950 m.
The climate is typical for the west parts of the Rhodope mountain. Summer is cool and damp, and thе autumn - long and warm.
The population is around 387 inhabitants.

In Mogilitsa there is a kindergarten and primary school.

Tourism and landmarks

The most famous landmark of Mogilitsa is Agushevi Konatsi. In 1834 in the village was built a large feudal castle (konak) - the largest in the Balkans at the time. It was conceived and implemented as a solid winter abode of Agush Agha and his sons. Construction of Agushevi Konak lasted 20 years.

In the area of the village there are 20 caves, the most interesting of them is Uhlovitsa. It is located in the area of "Sinite virove"  3 km east of the village, on the left bank of the river Arda.

Northwest of Mogilitsa near the area "Chereshite" is Kale - an old fortress from the Thracian time used by Slavs.

In the center of the village has a monument to the biggest scoop in Bulgaria.

Mogilitsa offers excellent conditions for rural and ecological tourism. The village has several small family hotels and taverns.

In Mogilitsa operates a tourist servicet center, assisting the development of tourism and provides assistance to tourists. Some interesting and convenient routes in the region have been created - to the village of Arda, to the village of Koshnitsa, to the source of the river Arda, to the village Bukata and the caves around.
