Leshtarka is a village in Southern Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Krumovgrad, Kardzhali Region.

It is situated at about 16 km south-west of Krumovgrad, 47 km south-east of the regional center Kardzhali and about 311 km in the same direction of the capital Sofia city.

The village is located in an area with mountainous and hilly relief at an altitude of 600 m. It is part of the transitional - Mediterranean climate zone. Winters are characterized as relatively mild and summers as long and hot.

The population of Leshtarka is about 210 people.

An international road part of the transport corridor № 9 Kardzhali - Makaza - Alexandroupolis passes near the village. This road is a major thoroughfare for Southern Bulgaria and has contributed a lot to the economic development of the region.

Leshtarka has relatively well developed infrastructure - most of the streets are paved, there are electricity and water supply systems. Bus transport connects the village with the municipal town.

The nearest primary school is located in the village of Tokachka / 2 km to the west / and the nearest secondary school is in Krumovgrad. The nearest kindergarten is also there. Medical assistance can be obtained in the village of Tokachka by one GP. The nearest multiprofile hospital is located in Krumovgrad.

The most common crop which has provided the livelihood of the population for years, is tobacco.

 

LANDMARKS AND TOURISM

One of the most interesting sights that can be visited about 20 km in the north-east in the village of Rogach is the Rock tomb - sanctuary, known among locals as Guyu or Kuyu. The sanctuary is located on the right bank of the River Krumovitsa. The site is revered as sacred as two small holes resembling human steps were found on the rocks. These tracks are called “The steps of Ali” (Muslim saint).

About 8 km northwest of Leshtarka in the village of Ribino is situated the area of "Ribino" declared protected in order to preserve populations of endangered species of animals and plants, and preservation of karst landscape including rocks , springs and caves.

The architectural landmarks in Krumovgrad are also exceptionally interesting. In the town can be seen the remains of a fortifying wall, part of the foundations of a fortified village, the mosque "Seytlyar dzhamisi", built in 1855 on the foundations of an old wooden mosque from XVI - XVIII century and considered to be one of the main reasons for the existence of the town and the villages that surround it, and the museum collection consisting of over 2000 exhibits, located in a house declared a cultural monument.

The traditional cultural festivals "The lights of Krumovgrad" held annually on the eve of May 24, are also attracting Bulgarian and foreign tourists.
