Village of Kushla

Kushla is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Zlatograd Municipality, Smolyan region.

The village is located near the border with Greece, about 30 km southeast of Zlatograd, and in the same direction at 85 km from the town of Smolyan and 321 km from the capital city - Sofia.

The altitude is 749 meters. Climate is Mediterranean, characterized by moderately warm summer and relatively mild winter.

The permanent population is about 80 people.

In Kushla there is a town hall and shop. The nearest kindergarten is located in the village Dobromirtsi / 18 km northeast /. High school can be found in Benkovski / 16 km northeast / where it can be obtained also a medical care - two GPs and two dentists. Hospital is in Zlatograd.

The captivating beauty, diverse natural features of the Rhodopes and rich history even today attract many tourists to the village.

Near Kushla is situated the area "Caves". Here nature has created an extremely bizarre rock formations. Very interesting is the rock bridge, which is about 50 meters.

Another attraction is the rock formation "Maiden Rock",  locals tell interesting stories about it.

In the village Kayaloba / 11 km northeast / is located rock phenomenon "Elephant". The scale attributed miraculous health effects of children suffering from diseases and other patterns.

Tourist attractions in Zlatograd are:

  •  Ethnographic complex Zlatograd - a large open-air museum that shows how the city looked hundreds of years ago. There are many buildings and sites that reveal and show the nature, geography, and richest of the rich history of Zlatograd
  • Monument of Delio Chieftain, built on the site where according to legend the famous Bulgarian rebel's was death shot;
  • Church "Holy Assumption", built in 1834 on the ruins of another Christian church (destroyed by the Turks around 1722) - one of the oldest churches in the Rhodopes. In the courtyard of the temple is preserved and can be considered a unique small school.
