Village of Kupen

Kupen a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Madan Municipality, Smolyan region.
In Bulgaria there is another village with the same name in Sevlievo Municipality, Gabrovo region.
It is about 41 kilometers northeast from the town of Smolyan, nearly 25 km in the same direction from the town of Madan and 257 km southwest from the city of Sofia. Village of Banite is located 7 km northeast.
The village is situated in the central Rhodopes at 1,000 meters altitude. The climate is continental. Winter is long but mild with heavy snow. Summer is cool.
The permanent population is about 50 people. The main occupation is agriculture.
There is a town hall and shop. In the village Oryahovets / 5 km / there is a kindergarten, primary school, mosque, shops, restaurants and a gas station. There you will find a general practitioner. The nearest hospital is in the town of Madan.
Surroundings and sights
In Oryahovets you can see Pavlovskata vodenitsa, situated at river Malka Arda. Built in 1870. In the village there are stories about this mill. It is said that she is "master" (guardian spirit) that keeps her and the owners of the dangers.
In the nearby village of Banite, you can go to the beach with mineral thermal spring water which is known since Roman times.
Nearly 19 km northwest in the village of Slaveino you can see: house - museum of Prof. Dr. Konstantin Chilov,
Church "St. Iliya" - known for its golden domes and four chapels well preserved until today.
In the town of Madan, you can visit: Cave Museum "Sharenka", area "Gabata", rock "Rimpapa", area "Kichikaya".
