The village of Kraishte

Kraishte is a village in South-western Bulgaria. It is part of the municipality of Belitsa, Blagoevgrad Region.

In Bulgaria there is one more village with the same name - in the municipality of General-Toshevo, Dobrich Region.

It is located 5 km south-east of Belitsa, 67 km in the same direction of the regional center Blagoevgrad, 14 km north-east of Razlog, 16 km in the same direction of one of the most popular resorts in Bulgaria - Bansko and approximately 160 km south-east of the capital Sofia city.

Kraishte is situated on the eastern bank of Mesta River between the mountains Rila and Rhodopes at an approximate altitude of 896 m. Beside Mesta River, the Votarichka river also passes near Kraishte. The climate is transitional-continental with Mediterranean influence and in the higher parts - mountainous.

With population of nearly 2320 people Kraishte is the second largest village in the municipality of Belitsa.

infrastructure

The village has a well-developed infrastructure - most of the streets are paved and lighted. It has water supply,  electricity and sewerage systems as well as communications system. All mobile operators have coverage. Regular bus transport connects it to the municipal center - Belitsa.

Kraishte is set on the second-class road 84 connecting Velingrad /57 km in the north-east/ and Razlog and about 1 km of Belitsa railway station, part of the narrow-gauge railway line Septemvri /79 km in the north-east/ - Dobrinishte /20 km in the south-west/.

The village comprises a mayor hall, two mosques, primary school "Paisiy Hilendarski", a hotel, a football playgroung, private football team and a grocery store. The nearest community center, secondary school and kindergarten are in Belitsa. Medical care for the population is provided by one GP and one dentist and the nearest general hospital is in Razlog.

landmarks and tourism

The unique Bulgarian tourist site - The "Dansing" Bears park can be visited only 17 km north-west of the village, in the Andrianov chark area. The site was officially opened on 17 November 2000 with the assistance of "Four paws" foundation and occupies an area of 120 000 sq.m. There are forests, hills suitable for walks and rest, meadows and places for sunny recreation here. Specially construceted platforms allow visitors to observe and take pictures without disturbing the animals.

The ski-resort of Semkovo is located at the foot of Rila Mountain, about 22 km north-west of the village. It is set 1700 m above sea level, amidst pine forests with an exceptional panoramic view to Rila's peaks and offers nice conditions for winter sports and summer mountain tourism. There are six tracks with varying difficulty in the resort. Three of them are located on the northern slopes with a total length of 4 km, served by eight lifts.

One of the most modern ski-resorts in Bulgaria, Bansko, is also visited by lots of tourists. Bansko's tracks are situated in two main ski-centers - Chalin valog and Shiligarnika. They are both easily reacheable with the new lift constructed in 2003. The total length of Bansko's marked tracks is 70 km and they are suitable for all ski levels - from beginner to advanced.

Beside in Semkovo and Bansko, those who like winter sports can take advantage of the ski-centers:

  • "Bezbog" near Dobrinishte;
  • "Kulinoto" near Razlog.

About 21 km north-west, in the village of Dobarsko, is situated the church "St. Theodor Tyron and Theodor Stratilat" built in 1614 on the foundations of an old church from XII century. The temple is among the cultural monuments under the protection of UNESCO and is one of the 100 tourist sites in Bulgaria. Worships are not performed here but the church is open to visitors.

The late ancient fortress Momina kula is located 35 km south-east of Kraishte, close to the village of Kremen. The fort was declared an archaeological monument of national importance.

The two-day traditional fair "Pirin pee" held every two years in the Predel area near Razlog is also quite interesting for tourists.
