Village of Kirkovo

Kirkovo is a village in the Central part of Southern Bulgaria. It is administrative centre of Kirkovo Municipality, Kardzhali region.

It is located 45 km south from town of Kardzhali, 43 km south-west from town of Krumovgrad, 31 km east from town of Zlatograd and 10 km away from the Bulgarian-Greek border.

Its population is approximately 720 people.

The village spreads out the Eastern Rhodopes, at 523 m above sea level. The relief is plain and hilly. The climate is transitional-Mediterranean and characterizes with comparatively mild winter and hot, long summer.

Veykata mountain top (1463 m) is located in the region of Kirkovo. It is the most southern point in Bulgaria and the highest mountain top in the Eastern Rhodopes.

In 2011 the construction of the road for Greece through Makaza pass is expected to be finished. It is envisaged to connect the region with town of Komotini which is 33 km in southern direction.

There is a municipal building, a police station, health services, a professional high school, a comprehensive school, a kindergarten, a community centre, bank offices, a pharmacy, a drug-store, a hotel, a holiday complex and shops.

The companies in the village are mainly of private tradesmen in the sphere of textile production, mechanical engineering, transportation and logging.

Tobacco is the main means of living in the area. Pepper and fruits are also planted.

Tourism

In the region of Kirkovo is located Gyumyurdzhinski snezhnik massif which is the biggest protected land in the Eastern Rhodopes since 2003. It occupies land of 1926,40 hectares. Its purposes are to preserve the last century-old forests with beech-trees, fir-trees and mountainous sycamore trees and the variety of flora and fauna threatened with extinction. Golden eagle and black woodpecker may be seen in the area. 11 species of plants and 5 species of animals here are added to the list of the Bulgarian Red Book.

The most southern point in Bulgaria - Veykata mountain top is located here. The starting point to the top is 'Hvoynova polyana' (Juniper meadow in English) mountain hostel. The distance is about 5 km by a cobblestone road from the most southern village in Bulgaria - Gorno Kapinovo (Kirkovo municipality).

Village of Mazhentsi comprises a centre for fishing tourism and recreation. There is a reservoir and four bungalows. Restaurant is envisaged to be constructed.

There are many old bridges constructed by local masonry masters. The most preserved are the villages of Dragnovo, Shumnatitsa, Gorski izvor, Lozengradtsi and Tihomir.

Mineral spring with debit of 20 l/sec is located near village of Kirkovo. Its waters are hypo-thermal (22 C to 24 C), with low mineralization, hydro carbonated, containing the chemical elements - Ka, Na and Mg. They are used for balenological purposes, bottling and soft drinks production.
