Location



Kesten Village is located in the Western Rhodopes, near the Bulgarian-Greek border. It is 37 km south of the municipal center - Devin. It is 1320 meters above sea level. In the village flows Kestenska river, a tributary of Vacha. The population numbered 136 people.

History


There are different legends for the origin of its name. One of them was among the village horse chestnut, whence its name is derived, and according to another a shepherd died and in his bag were found chestnuts from his birthplace, from where they left the area and the name of the village.
During the Balkan War almost the whole village was burned because of the participation of some of its inhabitants in the Batak massacre.

Nature and sights



Nearby are characterized by diverse topography and rich vegetation, beautiful scenery and many natural attractions. Relief diversity is expressed in the presence of rock influences such as the hammer Sasipata, Fatmatski stone caves and Kestenska Forgovska hole. Sasipata na chuka is a rock formation representing a stones accumulated in one place, with thousands of cubic meters. Sightseeing is situated about 800m from the village. Northwest of village lies Kestenska cave that has not been studied and well laid out, but is a tourist attraction. Cave Forgoskata hole is 600 meters long and has an internal river. The presence of caves fosters speleoturism in the region.

Flora and fauna in the region are extremely diverse. There are also many rare plant and animal species. About 0.5 km from the village is reserve Shabanitsa. The purpose of its establishment is the conservation of old beech-spruce forest over 200 years, a separate spruce specimens and over 350 years ago. The total area of 22.6 ha reserve is a buffer zone of 33.0 ha. The reserve includes three plantations, mainly of coniferous species with a mean age of 250-300years., Completeness 0.8 to 1, northwest to southwest exposure located on steep terrain of 1700-1800 m altitude. Inhabited by deer and capercaillie.

Kesten Village is located in one of the most beautiful places in the Rhodope Mountains. Preserved nature, unspoilt surroundings, rich in water resources and natural landmarks define attractiveness of the village and its development potential of resort-tourist activities.
