Village of Ilindentsi

Ilindentsi is a village in South-western Bulgaria, part of Strumyani Municipality, Blagoevgrad Region.

It is 54 km south-east from town of Blagoevgrad, 3 km north-east from village of Strumyani, 36 km north from the Bulgarian-Greek border at village of Kulata and 136 km south from city of Sofia. Regular public transportation to the municipal centre and the neighbouring towns and villages.

The village spreads out the foot of Pirin Mountain, at beautiful, white limestone rocks. Phenomenal rocks surround the village from north, east and south. The sea altitude is 443 m.

Ilindentsi is with transitional Mediterranean climate that characterizes with long, hot summer and warm, short winter.

The population is approximately 900 people.

The village is well-developed and provided with electricity, water, partial sewerage system and communication equipment. The commercial net is well-developed as well. There is a town-hall, a comprehensive school, a kindergarten, two community centres, a post office, a police officer and an orthodox church. Several coquettish houses offer accommodation.

Above the village are located the biggest marble-quarries on the Balkan Peninsula. Just 3 km from here are located two operational plants for marble processing and production of marble wares. The village is with more than 20 workshops for marble ware production.

Landmarks and tourism

In the last years village of Ilindentsi is popular with its unique open-air marble sculpture park, set on area of 10 decares. The park represents the creative ideas of different artists-sculptors from Japan, France, Bulgaria, Germany and other countries. The foundation of Art Ilindentsi and its chairman Ivan Rusev create the park again and again every year. Annual August symposium presents the new sculptures. Impressive is the nigh illumination on the several works of art, the sculpture elements and the Information centre.

Another local place of interest is St Marina church, which is located in the centre of the village. The church is monument of culture and was built 5 centuries ago as Roman baptistery.

Marked eco-path starts from the sculpture symposium and crosses through 'Zandana' rock complex, 'The tears for the dead' holy spring and prolongs through the amazing rock shapes and natural sites, part of Pirin National Park. The caves in the region are excellent for speleological expeditions and extreme sports. The high mountain lakes and pastures are amazing part of the land scenery.

The guests may visit the Historical Museum in village of Strumyani (3 km). The museum has rich collection of documents, costumes, tools, coins and other antiques found in the region. Popular is also the place of Rupite (28 km), where is located the church 'St Petka Bulgarska', built on the initiative of Vanga Prophet.

The traditional fair of Ilindentsi takes place between 1st and 3rd August.

On the first February Saturday takes place the traditional Wine Holiday. People taste and rate the wine of the local wine producers.
