Village of Gradat

Gradat is a village in southern Bulgaria. It is located in Smolyan Municipality, Smolyan region.
 
It is approximately 17 km northeast from the town of Smolyan, some 39 km southeast from the town of Chepelare and 34 km in the same direction from the ski-resort Pamporovo, nearly 23 km northwest from the town of Madan and 254 km southeast from the city of Sofia.
Bus line connects it with neighboring towns.
 
Located in the heart of the mountains at 1057 meters altitude. The climate is mountainous, with a strong influence of the Mediterranean. Winters are mild and snowy, summer is cool and moist, and the autumn - long and warm.

The permanent population is about 120 inhabitants.

The village has a town hall, cafe and shop. There is a range of mobile operators, cable TV and Internet. Nearest hospital, kindergarten and school are located in the town of Smolyan.
 
LANDMARKS
 
One of the biggest landmarks is "Momchilova fortress" in the area "Gradishteto". Legend connects the fortress with the figure of Momchil Voivode, who defended the Rhodopes to the invasion of Ottoman Turks in the late 14th century. Revealed is part of the fortress wall, there are found many objects not only from the Middle Ages, and from much earlier times.
An eco path is built built offering recreation areas with water sources.
 
In the town of Smolyan guests of the village can visit: Smolyan History Museum - the oldest and largest in the Rhodope Mountains; Planetarium Smolyan, Rhodope Drama Theatre, church"St.Vissarion of Smolen", Monument of Orpheus and Eurydice, Observatory Rozhen.
