history

These lands have been inhabited since ancient times. Stone tombs dated back to the Thracian-Roman period have been revealed in 1965. Many ceramic fragments were discovered in them. The historians are certain that a large mound necropolis used to exist near Gorichane.
During the Ottoman Domination the settlement was named Yuch Orman, which means "three forests" in Turkish. In several documents from this period the settlement was also referred to as Yala Yuch Orman, as "yal" has the meaning of "a low place". Obviously the settlement was named after dense forests which used to surround it in the past. These forests have gradually disappeared later on while the locals were trying to obtain more arable lands. The modern name of the village "Gorichane" has the same meaning and derives from the Old-Bulgarian word for "forest".

infrastructure

In the village there is a grocery shop, a cafe, a pensioner's club, a mayoralty where a rich ethnographic collection is housed. The most significant landmark of the village though is its recently restored Orthodox church, built back in 1875.
The village is supplied with water and electricity on a regular basis. The roads are in a very good condition. Regular bus transportation is available to the town of Shabla where bus-lines are available to the town of Dobrich and the city of Varna.
Daily, transportation is organized to the school in Shabla free of charge for the pupils from the village.
10 properties in the village were already purchased by foreigners. Three English families have settled permanently in the village.

development prospects

Most of the younger people in the village are working in the town of Shabla. The older people are occupied agriculture. The land in the area is very fertile and there are wide field planted with sunflower, wheat and vine plantations. The local people are also being engaged into small-scale stock-breeding, for personal needs predominantly.
Due to its proximity the sea-coast, the beautiful ecologically clean nature and favourable climate Gorichane has a great potential for development in future. There are many opportunities for the development of rural, eco and cultural tourism.
An additional advantage for the village is its proximity to the municipal center  of Shabla where all modern conveniences and services, such as healthcare, education and administration are available.
The area also offers excellent condition for the construction of a wind park.

landmarks

The first thing to see when entering the village is the church, entirely built of stone. It has undergone a full reconstruction and is the most remarkable landmark in the village. Back in 1874 the local people from Yala Yuch Orman succeeded to obtain a permission from the Sultan for the construction of a church. They built it of white hewn stone using donations and volunteer labour. Several years later, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 the village was plundered and burned down by Turkish troops. The church was completely demolished, as well. Some 8 years ago the people of Gorichane, most of them pensioners, have decided to restore the church. Only the foundations of the original building were to be seen. Today the church rises again and services are carried out in it.
