Gaganitsa is a village in northwestern Bulgaria, a part of Berkovitsa municipality, Montana region.

It is located in the Fore, about 19 km north of Berkovitsa, about 21 km southwest of Montana and approximately 100 km northwest of Sofia city.

The terrain is hilly with an average altitude of 320 m. The climate is temperate clearly characterized by snowy winters, hot summers and rainy springs and autumns.

The village is one of the largest in the area. It has electricity and water. The streets are partially paved and lighted. There is mobile coverage and bus service to the municipality center and the surrounding villages.

Gaganitsa' s population is about 300 people.

The village has a town hall, a restored church, a functional community center with a library, shops and a general practitioner. In the village Borovtsi /8 km east/ is the closest kindergarten and the nearest school is in the village Zamfirovo /about 15 km southeast/. Since Gaganitsa is approximately at the same distance from Berkovitsa and Montana, where there is specialized medical care, the residents may prefer schools and kindergartens located there.


Landmarks and tourism

Zlatitsa River passes through Gaganitsa and nearby there is a lake suitable for fishing and water sports. The village is surrounded by deciduous forests and many meadows, great for hiking. In Kalimanitsa area, on the outskirts of the village grows a centennial tree at about 350 years, 25 meters high and 3.8 m circumference.

In the region were found objects, weapons, coins and forts from different historical eras - Thracian, Roman, Slav and others. 1 km northeast, in the area of Dedeliya was an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter.
At the lower end of the village are the remains of the church "Ascension", built in the late Middle Ages, declared a monument of culture.

About 16 km northwest of Gaganitsa is located the Lopushan monastery, which is restored, impressing with its beautiful architecture.

In Berkovitsa guests can explore the house-museum "Ivan Vazov", the situated next to it Architectural Museum of Culture and the Clock Tower, which is a remarkable monument, built in 1762.

At about 35 km southeast of Gaganitsa is Varshets, popular spa resort with mineral water and unspoiled nature. Diseases of the heart, the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system are being treated there.
