Town of Yakoruda

Yakoruda is a town in South-western Bulgaria. It is administrative centre of Yakoruda Municipality, Blagoevgrad region.

Yakoruda is 82 km east from town of Blagoevgrad, 128 km south from city of Sofia, 42 km west from town of Velingrad and 30 km south-east from Bansko ski resort.

Its population is approximately 5710 people.

The town spreads out the valley of Mesta River on the forest Rhodopes hill 'Buntishka'. It is surrounded by the Rhodopes Mountain from eastern and southern directions, and by Rila Mountain in northern and western directions. The sea altitude is 898 m.

The climate is humid continental with low influence from the Mediterranean Sea. Cold winters with average January temperatures about -2 C. Short and cool summers with average July temperatures about 18 C.

Infrastructure

The town is well-developed and provided with water, electricity, sewerage system, telephone net, cable TV and Internet connection. There is a municipal building, a post office, doctors, dentists, a high school, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a community centre, a mosque, two churches, bank offices and trade areas. One hotel is situated in 'Banite' land - just 2 km from the town.

Transport - daily bus transportation to Sofia, Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad, Razlog and Velingrad. The railway transportation is represented by the narrow-gauge track Septemvri-Dobrinishte. There are railway stations in town of Yakoruda and the villages of Avramovo, Smolevo, Cherna Mesta and Yurokovo.

Nowadays Yakoruda Municipality is the centre of the logging and wood-processing industry, and the machine production and equipment. The biggest part of the companies is occupied in the spheres of trade, repairs and services.

Landmarks and tourism

On the territory of Yakoruda Municipality is located Yakoruda Park area, which is part of Rila National Park. The area is accessible by one of the entrances of the park, set in 'Nehtenitsa' land. It is the starting point to the lakes of the high part of the mountain - Yakorudski, Grancharski and Ropalishki.
 
Yakorudski Lakes are situated in the Yakoruda circus, bordered by Suha vapa mountain top, the main hill and Kovach mountain top. They are part of seven lakes - three of them are very small, shallow and become too dry in the summer. The highest lake from the permanent ones is the Sinyoto Lake (Blue Lake in English). It is below Suha vapa mountain top (2465 m). It flows away in the Ribnoto Lake (Fish Lake in English) which gives the beginning of Golyama Benenska River (tributary of Bela Mesta River). The Martvoto Lake (Dead Lake in English) does not flow away anywhere. It is the biggest and deepest of all lakes set in Yakoruda circus. It is artificially stocked with trout. Gas erupts every five years.

In the region of Yakoruda are located the resort areas of 'Treshtenik' and 'Banite'. 'Treshtenik' comprises a tourist complex, a holiday house, a tourist mountain hostel, small holiday state centres and private villas. There are mineral springs in 'Banite' land. The place is with potential for balneology developing.
