Town of Tutrakan

Location

Tutrakan is in Silistra region, main office of municipality  with 14 settlements. It is situated on river Danube between Ruse/61/ km and Silistra/62/, on ground, sag on landslide, on 50m altitude. It is exhibited in front of all foreigns, who are traveling on the river.

The number of townspeople is changing  during the ages. 1880 - 7172 townspeople, 1910 - 10 490, 1946 - 7183, 1992 - 11573, 1997 - 11 045.

History

 During the antiquity the city is known as Transmariska. There are still remains of the stronghold, the so-called Roman wall.

During the Turkish domination, Tutrakan is a fishing city with mills in the water of Danube. It’s been captured by the Russian general Suvorov. There are square and memorial at the lower part of the city named after him. After the Liberation Tutrakan is district centre with well developed fishing and farming. It’s within the limits of Romania the from 1913 to 1940.

Economics

The industry is developing in the present - printed yokes, gas-cookers and hot-plates, reserve parts, hempen ware are being produced. There are two fishing markets, located near the city, which makes it an important fishing base. The dressmaking and tailoring firm "Leopard" produces quality clothing.

Apricot gardens and vineyards are being renewed in the surrounding area; grain crops, sunflower, herbs are traditionally cultivated; the animal husbandry is poorly developed.

Tutrakan is city with suitable circumstances for servicing and sojourn of local and international river-transport.

The most typical  thing for the fisherman’s houses is the lack of yard - the family of the fisherman’s is not occupied with farming.

  

Culture and landmarks

  

Its name shines in the educational sphere. The students are studying in two schools of general education - SOU "Jordan Jovkov" and SOU "Hristo Botev". The culture-mass activity is perfectly developing in the community centre “N. Vapcarov” /founded in 1873/. The museum of the Danube fishing and boat-making is the only one on the Danube shore. Boats, water wheels and yachts are being produced with a fine piece of workmanship in the fabric “Lodkostroitel”.

Church "St. Nicola"/1864/, ritual home, memorial of Panaiot Hitov /in the east part of the city/, memorials of Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Tanio Voivoda are the city landmarks. The only location of marsh cypress is located in the west part of the city.
