Town of Shivachevo

Location  

Town of Shivachevo is located in the Shivachevska valley (one of the smallest valleys behind Stara Planina Mountain) and in the southern foothills of Eleno-Tvardishki Mountain. The town is located about 30 km west from town of Sliven, 25 km north from town of Nova Zagora and 12 km east from town of Tvarditsa, which is the municipality centre.  

Relief  

Relief in the land of the town is mountainous and plain between hills. On the south-west is set the eminence of Mezhdenik and on the south-east is the rising ground of Shivachevo - Karabair. The slope of Stara Planina Mountain is steep and heavily rutted by sunken glens. The highest peak in the land of the town is Kichesta peak (1425 meters). On north-west of is located the highest peak of Eleno-Tvardishki Mountain - Chumerna peak (1 536 meters). 

Natural resources 

Deposits of black and brown coal are available in Eleno-Tvardishki Mountain. Non-metalliferous minerals such as limestone and inert materials - sand, gravel and more, are the most important resources of the area. 

Climate 

The climate in Shivachevo region is transitive-continental. The average air temperature is about 12 C, the average January temperature is - 1 C and the average July temperature is - 23 C. The annual amount of rainfalls is about 600 millimetres/sq.m. During winter time quite often occurs the borapodoben wind. Only at the highest parts of the Eleno-Tvardishki Mountain the climate is mountainous. 

Water 

Small rivers pass through the town and they flow into the Blyagornitsa River, which is a tributary of Belenska River. This is the water pool of Tundzha River. Near the former mine ‘Hadzhi Dimitar’ is located a mineral spring with water flow about 5 litters /sec. South-east of the town is built Shivachevo micro dam, which is used for irrigation and fish-breeding. 

Soils 

The most common soils in town of Shivachevo are the cinnamon forest soils, that are suitable for cultivation of vines, perennial trees and grain (wheat, corn, etc.). Smaller area is occupied by alluvial-meadow soils, which are for peaches, vegetables and other agricultural crops. Brown forest soils are located in Stara Planina Mountain area and are suitable for potato cultivation.
Pure and mixed forests of oak, hornbeam, beech, etc are met in Shivachevo region. Coniferous trees of black and white pine, fir and others are also part of the region. In the river valleys you can come across some willows, poplars, elm-trees, etc. The animal world is represented by red deer, roe, wild boar, wolf, fox, rabbit and more. 

History 

It is remarkable that in town of Shivachevo used to pass an old Roman road. When excavations were done amphora, pitosi and a Roman warrior helmet were found. Kaleto fortress is situated in the town. 

Religion 

The population of the town confess Christian religion. The local parish church is called ‘Saint Dimitar’ and was built in the middle of the 18th century. Famous pop Hariton served there several years before the April uprising.
The church in which courtyard is the tomb of the first teacher in Shivachevo bears the name of St. Dimitar Solunski. Priest Hariton used to preach in the church for a short time (1868-1870 years). His name is associated with the epic which happened in Dryanovo Monastery. 

Economics 

Agriculture has been the main occupation of people there during the recent years. Mainly perennial crops, cherries, peaches and wine varieties of grapes (Cabernet and Merlot) are cultivated.
