Town of Dzhebel

Dzhebel is a town in the Central part of Southern Bulgaria. It is administrative centre of Dhzebel Municipality, Kardzhali region.

Dzhebel is located 21 km south from town of Kardzhali, 15 km south-west from town of Momchilgrad, 28 km south-east from town of Ardino, 28 km north from town of Kirkovo and 33 km north-east from town of Zlatograd.

Its population is approximately 3 280 people.

The town is set in a mountainous region, at the foot of the Eastern Rhodopes, at 330 m above sea level. The relief is hilly and the climate is transitional Mediterranean. Mild winter and hot summer. The average winter temperature is about 0 C, the summer one - about 24 C.

Infrastructure

Dzhebel is with excellent infrastructure. Water supply, electricity, sewerage system and telephone net are provided.

International transport corridor No 9 (Helsinki - Moscow - Bucharest - Ruse - Dimitrovgrad - Alexondropolis) passes nearby.

The location between 'Rudozem-Ksanti' check point and the future one at 'Makaza' is going to turn the central part of the territory into an important transit corridor.

The town comprises a municipal building, a police station, a post office, several doctors and dentists, a comprehensive school, a professional high school, a community centre, a kindergarten, a church, a mosque, a stadium, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, etc.

Economics

The main means of living of the population is tobacco growing. Dzhebel citizens produce thousands tones of 'Dzhebel basma' tobacco annually.

Almost all sorts of vegetable cultures are planted as well.

There are companies in the textile industry, soft drinks production and paste production.

Tourism

The region of Dzhebel keeps many tracks of the Thracians and the Romans. There are many Thracian sanctuaries, rock tombs, fortresses, etc.

Protected areas are:

Chamluka reserve - this is the smallest reserve in the Eastern Rhodopes. Its square surface is 30 000 sq. m. It is set in the settlement of village of Vodenicharsko (8 km away from town of Dzhebel) and is in close proximity to the natural phenomenon of 'Schupenata planina' ('The broken mountain' in English).

Natural site 'Kaleto' - rock shapes on area of 22.40 hectares set in the settlement of village of Ustren (10 km away from town of Dzhebel). The medieval fortress of Ustra is located there.

The Medieval fortress of Ustra is one of the most preserved fortresses in the Rhodopes. It is an archeological monument with national significance. The fortress was built during the Middle Ages. It was powered mainly by the Byzantium Empire. Ustra was built in Xth century with the purpose to protect the passing trade road from there. The fortress is an interesting archeological monument set in the picturesque and unique nature.
