“Varusha” is a quarter in the heart of the Old Town in Veliko Tarnovo, where one can still feel the old spirit of the Bulgarian Revival times. It’s situated on the north, in immediate proximity of the center and the famous “Samovodski bazaar”, along where small shops offers traditional Bulgarian handicraft articles. Next to the quarters are the famous sites – “The House with the Monkey”, “Stambolov Inn” and the Church of “St. Nikola”, where has is claimed to be the staring point of the First National Assembly after the Liberation of Bulgaria.
The authentic houses, built in 18 - 19th c., quietness and calmness are still preserved there. The аmphitheatrical position of these buildings draws a wonderful picture in the very heart of Veliko Tarnovo.
The American college “Arkus” is located in “Varusha” quarter.
There is “Baza II” or the so-called "Old hospital".
“Samovodski Bazaar” is one of the rare combination of old and authentic atmosphere in the center of the town with modern trade area. It’s a nice narrow street in the Old Town of the city, famous with authentic workshops of various crafts masters. The potter’s, the armourer’s, the wood carver’s workshop, kadaif workshop („kadaif” is a Turkish syrup-soaked shredded sweet), the icon-painting studio, the weaving workshop and the sweet shop are only part of the well-equipped and still working workshops. There are many souvenir and antique shops. With all these workshops is presented the architecture, the economy and the mode of production in the first half of the 20th c. in Veliko Tarnovo.
