Lyubimec is a town in South Bulgaria, in Haskovo region, and is an administrative center of Lyubimec municipality.

It is located 12 km northwest from town of Svilengrad, 18 km southeast from town of Harmanli and 45 km southeast from Haskovo. The distance to the Greek border is 9 km, and to the Turkish border is 45 km.

Population is about 8000 people.

The terrain in the area is flat, the climate is with predominantly Mediterranean influence. This is expressed primarily by higher average annual temperatures. The absolute value of the maximum temperatures are measured as one of the most generous in the country. Therefore, crops grown in the region are highly thermophilic - vegetables, cereals, cotton, grapes and other.

Water resources of the municipality are formed mainly by the Maritsa River and its flows.

Transport

Lyubimets Municipality has very good transportation-geography location. Through the land of the municipality and through the town of Lyubimec passes international road E-80, which connects Western and Central Europe through Sofia, Plovdiv, Haskovo, Svilengrad, Liubimetz with Istanbul, Middle East, Asia and North Africa. Around the town will be passing the "Maritza"  highway, which has the same direction as E-80. Besides the road corridor here passe the rail line of Western and Central Europe via Sofia - Plovdiv - Dimitrovgrad - Lyubimec - Svilengrad, Istanbul and the Middle East.

Economics

Lyubimets Municipality is a center for wholesale trade with vegetables. With the fertile land and the high quality of the agricultural production the town is wins recognition as a regional center for trade and wholesale of fruit and vegetables. The melons and watermelons are known as the sweetest and juiciest one in Bulgaria.

Education

Educational system in Lyubimets is presented by: Community center "Bratoljubie", High School "G.Terpeshev", Elementary school "Hristo Botev", Primary school "Zahary Stoyanov" and kindergarten "Ray" with branches in Malko gradishte, Lozen and Oryahovo villages.

Health care

On the territory of the town is functioning Specialized Hospital for Long Treatment and Rehabilitation.

Tourism

The tourism potential of the municipality of Lyubimets includes opportunities for development of eco, rural and wine tourism. Along "Ivaylovgrad" dam there are conditions for water sports - sailing, fishing, rowing sports. The future construction of National Park "Eastern Rhodopes" will further promote the development of tourism in general, and in particular - the specialized tourism.

About 10 km away, above the village of Malкo Gradishte, there is the Thracian cult complex - Gluhite Kamani (Deaf Stones). Rock niches are carved on four huge stone pieces in XII - VIII century BC. Cultural monument of great religious and funerary complex, and later on a church has been built. 

"St. Anastasius" church in the little village of Malko Gradishte is one of the first Orthodox churches in the area. Now it is a declared monument of the culture.

"Ptichi kamuk" /Birds rock/ in the village of Valche pole represents a huge rock resembling a majestic eagle, located north of the village. During the excavations, in 2005, were revealed the remains of buildings, ceramics and some fortified embankment (two dwellings from the late Bronze and early Iron Age and a fortification wall).

"Gospodeva stupka" /God's step/ is an extremely interesting natural and cultural site, which is located in the area "Kerez valley" in the mainstream of the river bed. Around the archeologist marked many dolmens, some in good condition. It is a natural hollow in the rock and throughout the whole year is filled with water that seeps through the rock.
