Somovit is a village in North Bulgaria. It is located in Gulyantsi municipality, Pleven region.

It is 12 km northeast of the town of Gulyantsi, 43 km north from the town of Pleven and 197 km northeast of the capital Sofia. The neighboring villages of Dolni vit and Milkovitsa are 4 km northeast and 6 km south.

It is situated on the very bank of Danube river and its altitude is 50 m. The climate is temperate with cold winter and hot summer while there is little precipitation. In its area there are mainly forests of acacia and poplar trees.

Railway and bus transportation connect it to the other settlements. Here is constructed port that together with that in Nikopol forms the border checkpoint Somovit-Nikopol.

The village is one of the large settlements in the municipality so it is well maintained. The main streets are asphalted and there is lighting, there are constructed water and electricity systems. There is constructed wind power park for producing electricity. In Somovit is the highest on the Balkan Peninsula wind generator. All mobile operators have coverage.

The permanent population is about 710 people.

In the village of Somovit are functioning town hall, community center, kindergarten, store and restaurant. The health care is provided by one GP and one dentist. Primary school is in the village of Milkovitsa. High schools, medical center and hospital you will find on the territory of the town of Gulyantsi.

Tourism and landmarks

The church "St Nikolay" in the village dates back to 1859 and ten years later it was consecrated.

The name of the village is derived from the word "som" that means catfish for in the past the local fishermen were travelling all over the country to sell large catfishes. Today the river is still good for fishing and also for relaxation and sun bathing.

Interesting fact is that on Robert island - part the South Shetland Islands in the Antarctic there is port named after the village.

For its perfect location the village was inhabited since III-IV century B.C. There are objects from Thracian times as well as cemeteries, bronze coins and other objects from the Roman era.

The local cultural and archaeological heritage in the area is presented mainly by the archaeological reserve "Oescus" near Gigen village (32 km) which is declared cultural monument with national significance. It consists of remains from Roman and Byzantium cities.
